Setting up password protection for your Shopify store is the most popular way to control access to your site. Whether you're still in the development stage or looking to limit access to a specific group, you can use the built-in Restrict Store Access setting in Shopify to password protect your whole store.
This guide will walk you through the simple process of how to set password protection on your Shopify store, in case you need this pre-launch or selective access control over your site.
How to Set Password Protection on your Shopify store
Step 1: In the Shopify Admin Panel, select Online Store from the left-hand menu.
Step 2: Under the Online Store section, click on Preferences.
Step 3: Within the preferences, scroll down until you find the Restrict Store Access > Password protection section. Check the box that says Restrict access to visitors with the password. A password field will be below. Enter the desired password you want to use to protect your store.
Step 4: Save Changes. Log out of your Shopify account or open your store in an incognito browser to ensure the password protection is working as intended. (Because if you are logged in as an admin, you may get access to the shop without entering password)
How to change store password
To change the password just repeat the steps described above.
Browse to your Shopify Admin > Online Shop > Preferences, and scroll all the way down to Password Protection
Enter the desired password and Save. Test on site in an incognito window.
How to remove password
To remove password protection of your Shopify store, navigate to the same section and untick Password Protection. Please note that shops in a development program are not allowed to remove password.
Browse to your Shopify Admin > Online Shop > Preferences, and scroll all the way down to Password Protection
Untick the checkbox Restrict access to visitors with the password and Save. Test on site in an incognito window.
